Move

One sense at a time

Not a workout plan. Three senses to go through — touch, balance, breath — and a few minutes each. Every one can be done standing in a kitchen, badly, half-finished.

If you only do one thing

Fascia release: three points

Fascia release, three points. Slow and boring is the point.

5 min max

Touch

Through the skin

Feather-light hands on your own body. This is where lymph and fascia live — nothing here needs strength.

A hand resting lightly on a collarbone in soft window light

Neck and collarbone sweep

5 min max

Standing or sitting, no equipment, feather-light pressure. If you press hard, you are doing it wrong.

  1. 01Rest flat fingers just below the ears. Sweep down the sides of the neck toward the collarbones, 10 slow strokes.
  2. 02Fingertips into the hollows above the collarbones. Press in very gently and let go, 10 times, in time with your breath.
  3. 03Hands under the armpits, elbows in. Squeeze and release 10 times.
  4. 04Finish: shoulders up to the ears, then drop them with an audible sigh, 3 times.

Fascia release: three points

5 min max

Fascia is the wrapping around your muscles. Burnout tends to shrink-wrap it. A tennis ball or your own hands is all you need — or nothing at all.

  1. 01Feet: stand and roll one sole slowly over a ball (or the edge of a rolled towel) for 60 seconds. Swap.
  2. 02Jaw and temples: fingertips in small circles at the hinge of the jaw, 60 seconds, mouth slightly open.
  3. 03Chest: cross one hand to the opposite collarbone and stroke outward toward the shoulder, 10 times each side.
  4. 04Back of the legs: stand, hinge forward with soft knees, hang for 30 seconds, roll up one vertebra at a time.
  5. 05Slow and boring is the point. Sharp pain means back off.

Balance

Through weight and space

Slow shifting from one foot to the other. Balance work quiets the head faster than effort does.

Beginner tai chi: four moves

10 min max

Anywhere you can stand with arms free. Knees soft, weight even, slower than feels natural.

  1. 01Standing still: feet hip-width, knees unlocked, breathe into the belly for 1 minute.
  2. 02Lifting hands — raise both arms to chest height on the in-breath, lower on the out-breath. 8 times.
  3. 03Parting the wild horse's mane — shift weight to one leg, open the arms slowly as if drawing curtains. 4 each side.
  4. 04Waving hands like clouds — weight rocks side to side, hands cross softly in front of the face. 2 minutes.
  5. 05Close: hands rest on the lower belly, stand and do nothing for 30 seconds.
Follow along with a 10-minute flow

Breath

Through the breath

The one thing you can change in ten seconds, sitting down, with nobody noticing.

A sheer curtain lifting at an open window beside an empty wooden chair

Double inhale, one long exhale

2 min

The physiological sigh. Fastest thing there is for taking the edge off.

  1. 01Inhale through the nose until the lungs feel fairly full.
  2. 02Sip a second short inhale on top of it, through the nose.
  3. 03Let it all out through the mouth, slow and long, until you are empty.
  4. 04Repeat 5 to 10 times. Stop if you feel light-headed.

Swelling that does not settle, chest pain, numbness or dizziness is a doctor’s question — and if you are pregnant, recovering from surgery, or being treated for a lymph or heart condition, ask your clinician before starting.
